Shopify checkout translation: mostly done

Shopify checkout translation is mostly not your job. Shopify provides 33 pre-translated checkout languages, and the checkout displays in the language the shopper is browsing your store in. You do not need an app for it. There is one documented exception worth knowing about, and it is a small one: manual payment method instructions are not translated.

This is a rare case where the honest answer is that the platform already covers it, so the useful thing a guide can do is tell you where to stop looking.

The one gap: manual payment instructions

Shopify's documentation lists manual payment method instructions among the content Translate & Adapt cannot translate. If you offer bank transfer, cash on delivery or any manual method with written instructions, that text stays in whatever language you wrote it in — at the exact moment a shopper is deciding whether to trust you with money.

It is a narrow gap and an easy one to close by hand, because there are usually only a handful of methods. It is worth an explicit check before a market launch rather than after.

Where the real work is: everything around checkout

Checkout being covered does not make the purchase path covered. The store's 20 publishable languages, the product pages, the policies, the shipping copy and the emails all sit outside it. A shopper who reads a fully translated checkout after three English pages has already decided.

So the useful mental model is: Shopify owns the checkout, you own the road to it — and what Shopify Markets covers sets exactly where that boundary falls. That road is where conversion is actually won — in controlled 50/50 tests across 40+ merchants and 50+ site and country combinations, translated stores lifted conversion by an average of 40% at launch, with individual results between 15% and 100%. Those tests were about the store, not the checkout, because the checkout was already translated in both arms.

What to check before a market launch

Confirm the market's language is published on the store, not just supported by checkout — the two lists are different sizes. Confirm your manual payment instructions, if you use any, are written in that language. Confirm your policies and transactional copy are translated, since those carry legal weight. Then check the road: product page translation is where most of the words are, and the best Shopify translation apps guide covers which tool reaches which content.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need an app to translate Shopify checkout?

No. Shopify provides 33 pre-translated checkout languages and the checkout follows the language the shopper is browsing in.

Is anything at checkout not translated?

Yes, one thing: manual payment method instructions are on Shopify's documented list of content Translate & Adapt cannot translate.

How many languages can the store itself have?

Up to 20 published languages on every plan except Lite. Note that this is a smaller list than checkout's 33 pre-translated languages.

Does checkout follow the store language automatically?

Yes. The checkout displays in the language the shopper is browsing your store in.
