Google Translate on Shopify: the honest answer

You almost certainly cannot add the official Google Translate widget to a Shopify store. Google stopped issuing its Website Translator widget to new commercial users in 2019 and has restricted it to non-commercial use — government, non-profit and academic sites — since 2020. A commercial Shopify store is none of those, so most guides recommending it are describing a tool you cannot get.

That is worth knowing before you spend an afternoon looking for the setting. The apps with “Google” or “translate” in their names on the Shopify App Store are third-party products that may use Google's translation engine through its paid API. That is a different thing from the free widget, and it behaves differently.

Why it would not have helped your SEO anyway

A widget that swaps the visible text in the shopper's browser leaves one URL. Search engines see one page in one language, so the translated versions cannot be indexed and cannot rank — there is nothing for them to rank. This is the one case where the familiar warning about browser-side translation is literally true.

It is worth being precise, because the warning gets stretched to cover tools it does not apply to. Established translation apps are not browser-side. Native Shopify translations live on Shopify's own language URLs. Weglot is a reverse proxy serving translated pages on dedicated URLs with hreflang and translated slugs, and those pages are indexed. Widgets are the exception, not the rule.

What to use instead

Shopify's own Translate & Adapt auto-translates up to two languages at no cost, and those translations live on real, indexable language URLs. For most merchants testing one new market that is the correct starting point and there is no reason to pay for anything. Past two languages you need an app or a service — the best Shopify translation apps guide compares the three architectures, including which content each one can and cannot reach.

One more correction while you are here, because it appears in the same guides: Shopify's Geolocation app is gone. Installs were disabled on 1 February 2025 and the app was shut down and uninstalled from stores on 24 March 2025. Native domain and browser-language redirection replaces most of what it did, with a carve-out for stores on EU top-level domains. The current options are in Shopify language switcher options.

For the structural question behind all of this — one store or several — see selling on Shopify in multiple countries.

On machine translation quality generally: it is genuinely good enough to be the baseline now, which is exactly why it no longer differentiates anybody. What moves conversion is the depth beyond it. In controlled 50/50 tests across 40+ merchants and 50+ site and country combinations, translated stores lifted conversion by an average of 40% at launch, with individual results between 15% and 100%.

Frequently asked questions

Can I add Google Translate to my Shopify store for free?

Not the official Google widget. Google restricted its Website Translator to non-commercial government, non-profit and academic use from 2020, having stopped issuing it to new commercial users in 2019.

Do apps that use Google Translate have the same problem?

No. Third-party apps that call Google's translation API usually write translations to real language URLs, which are indexable. The problem is specific to the browser-side widget.

Is Google Translate good enough for product descriptions?

As a baseline, often yes. The gap is brand voice, which is why nearly all our merchants add human proofreading on top of machine translation rather than choosing between them.

Will translated pages rank if I use a proper app?

Yes, provided each translated version has its own URL and correct hreflang. That is true of native Shopify translations and of proxy-based apps alike.
